What Inspired You to Write Your Book?
My husband. He’d received an email from his nephew who spoke about David and the five stones gathered before meeting Goliath. The light bulb went on, he told me about the idea and I proceeded to write the book.
How Did You Come up With Your Characters?
All of the characters, including their names, were well thought out., Virginia especially. Her name means “pure.”
“See the silver veins here?” the man said, tracing his wrinkled fingers over the lines. “The veins represent my hand. When my child takes my hand and I walk with him or her throughout their life, they are never alone. Never.”
Virginia tried to capture the thoughts of the old man. He seemed to be saying that her birthright entitled her to walk with him—to hear him. He seemed a good enough man and truly seemed to care about her life, so why wouldn’t she want him to walk with her?
“I think I understand what you mean,” she said, touching the rock lightly with her forefinger.
“Your birthright gives you ample opportunity to set out into the world and to do all that will be required of you. Your birthright is the power and the connection with me that you need to be successful,” he said.
“Will I ever make lots of money?” said Virginia, but she had asked the wrong question.
The man frowned. “Perhaps you should think about getting that job first,” he said. “What have you done so far?”
Virginia thought. “Well, I’ve made a list of opportunities, and I have prayed about my job, and I have read scriptures relating to David and Goliath. Did you know Goliath lived in a town named Gath?”
The man nodded. “And do you know what Gath means?” he asked.
“Winepress,” Virginia said, feeling smarter than she should have.
“I am glad you came to me this day,” he said. “And do you know the significance of the winepress?”
“I have another Son who is beloved. You may know him.”
Virginia thought of all the David’s that hadn’t fit into her personal agenda and tried to think of someone she would have in common with Mr. Stream. She couldn’t think of anyone but the man in the brown Corduroys.
“Your right of course,” said Mr. Stream, seeming to read her thoughts. “My Son has sacrificed for all of my children. He is the wine-press, a fine word to study as you make your way to finding that new job.”
Virginia smiled. She couldn’t help it. And then a thought occurred to her. “You said something about getting me a spiritual name. What is it?”
“Study more about my Son,” he said, “and you’ll know. In fact, you know already.”
